Copyediting / Proofreading
Copyediting
Copyediting is an essential part of producing a professionally published book. Self-publishing authors rarely have the budget to match the books produced by large publishing firms but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t strive to achieve professional standards. Our editors are objective and vigilant and rest assured you won’t be paying for several layers of management conducting meetings in palatial offices. Our editors find errors of syntax, grammar, punctuation, sense, tense, inconsistency, spelling and repetition. Our fee includes the correction of these errors on the typescript although in some cases we may need to refer the script to you for correction if for example corrections affect the structure of the narrative. Our editor will refer queries to the author by email or letter if preferred.
Copyediting is charged from £6.00 per thousand words and is not subject to VAT when included in the general publishing process to produce and supply you with books. Some manuscripts require specialist subject editors who will be more expensive.
Editing is a service that cannot be automated and an allowance of 3-6 weeks in the production schedule is usually necessary.
Proofreading
Proofreading a manuscript will ensure that common errors of grammar, punctuation and spelling are identified before we get too far into a publishing project. Proofreading is not a guarantee that the manuscript is worthy of publication but it does help to ensure that certain fundamental errors are addressed. Proof reading is not a substitute for editing, and some errors we discover may involve such extensive correction that we will refer the script back to the author. Proofreading is popular with authors of privately published books where the book is not likely to come under the same scrutiny as a commercial venture. Proofreading is charged from £3.25 per thousand words and is not subject to VAT when included in the general publishing process to produce and supply you with books.
Initial assessment
If you would like an assessment of your manuscript to help you to decide whether you would like to proceed with self-publishing we can give you an editor’s assessment. This is entirely optional and does not commit you to publishing. Our editor will carry out a general assessment of your script to form an opinion about the writing style and whether your book would benefit from additional work by the author before submission for publication. The fee for this appraisal is £50 plus VAT and is payable in advance.
