Our top ten marketing tips for new authors

  1. Get prepared. You need to start thinking about the marketing of your book as early as possible. What’s your strategy? Make a plan, create a schedule and start early.
  2. Do your research. When you wrote your book, did you consider who was going to read it? Who are your target readers? Now how are you going to get it into their hands? What magazines do they read, where do they shop, what are their other interests? Make a list and then look at what you can do to get your book into those places.
  3. Blurb, blurb, blurb. This is your main marketing tool so you need to get it right. It should say just enough about your book to entice, attract, intrigue and make people want to find out more! Use this description to contact people with an invitation to review it, or write about it.
  4. What’s the story? What’s your USP (Unique Selling Point)? You need more than just a blurb to get press coverage. What’s newsworthy about it? Is the story you, your journey, how you became a published author? Or is there an element in the book which a journalist could make into a story?
  5. Think digital. You’re going to be marketing your book online because that’s where most people are these days. You could get a website, start writing a blog, set up social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter etc, make a video trailer... The options are endless. You’ll need a budget, a timeframe and you may need the help of an expert.
  6. Know your niche. There are millions of books out there and millions of websites. How is your book going to stand out? Focus in on your niche, draw in the people you think will love your book first. Know your audience and know what they want and where they’ll find it!
  7. Talk. Start talking about your book, but don’t just advertise. People won’t be interested in hearing about how amazing your book is for the 100th time! They’ll be interested in your expertise, your passion for your subject, and your story. Get blogging!
  8. Build relationships with bloggers and social media accounts. They will be your number one resource for information sharing. Could you run a blog tour? Could you offer your blog to other authors in the same way? Share, share, share!
  9. Get reviews. From everyone! Send review copies, contact bloggers, and consider every avenue. Did you know you can contact reviewers on Amazon? Also try Goodreads, which has an excellent reader community.
  10. Do something new every day. Marketing is often about trial and error, so you have to try something new to see if it works. Use your Google Analytics for your website and your social media analytics to see what works best, and don’t give up!
